Competing in the final tune-up before this week’s Division I-A duals, the Greenwave wresting team finished 4-1 in the Placer Duals on Saturday.

“We gave up 24 points each dual because of four empty classes, so we really needed pins to help our points,” Fallon coach Trevor de Braga said. “The kids wrestled tough.”

Facing teams from California and Northern Nevada’s Division I, Fallon finished third behind Spanish Springs and Carson City. Fallon defeated Golden Valley (Merced, Calif.), 45-31, and Placer (Calif.), 45-24 before recording several wins via forfeit in rolling over Paradise (Calif.), 43-27 and Yuba City, 57-12. The Greenwave’s lone loss was to Spanish Springs, 46-25.

“Spanish Springs is very tough and well coached,” de Braga said. “We lost some matches I thought we should have won but it was great to see tough competition over the weekend to prepare us for league duals this weekend.”

Sean McCormick (138 pounds), Trae Workman (152), Sam Goings (170) and Bryson Abe (182) each went undefeated over the weekend, while Terry White was undefeated in the 106 class but dropped his only match in the 113 class. Dylan McAfee (126) and Jack Swisher (145) each finished 3-1, and Mason Smith (113/120) and Kobe Abe (285) each ended at 2-2. Matt Goings (160) went 1-3.

This weekend’s league duals in Spring Creek will determine seeding for next week’s regional tournament, which will be Feb. 19-20 in Fallon. State is the following week in Primm.

“The toughest three weeks of the season are coming up and we can’t stop grinding as a team,” de Braga said. “We have potential to do big things in our division and our boys are in shape and putting in the hard work to be champions. Our hands will be full with some opponents in our league. We just can’t make mistakes in those crucial matches and come out on top.”
