The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is investigating a dead body found just east of Carson City.

Shortly after noon on Friday, several off-road riders discovered a body in a small SUV 3- to 5-miles east of Carson City in the Pine Nut range, said Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Furlong said the body of an adult male, believed to be about 50 years old, was found in the driver’s seat. A gun also was located in the vehicle.

Officials believe the body may be connected to a Carson City resident who went missing Dec. 7, however the body was so decomposed, it will be some time before the coroner can make a positive identification. Furlong said they think dental records will be the only way they can identify the body is through dental records.

The body was found in a small SUV and the vehicle and registration were both linked to the missing person.

The investigation is ongoing and officials are working with possible family to try to identify the body.
