Postal money order system. The postal order system is being introduced in California and will be inaugurated on the 5th of February. There will be eight money order offices as follows: Los Angeles, Marysville, Nevada City, Stockton, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose and Sonora ... and will extend to more as it gets to working well.

130 Years Ago

Advertisement. “California vegetables: Celery — 15 cents per bunch; cauliflower — 15 cents and 25 cents per head; lettuce — 25 cents per dozen; sweet potatoes — 5 cents per pound; oranges — 30 and 75 cents per dozen; cranberries — 75 cents per gallon. L. H. Bell.”

Missing umbrella. A tall man was caught coming out of the Capitol with an umbrella under his arm belonging to Treasurer Tufly. The man was captured and identified as District Attorney Alexander of Washoe City. When asked what he had to say for himself, he said he was from Washoe. He was immediately let go. As it is known from childhood, people are taught there to take anything they can find lying about loose in Carson. Mr. Alexander is an exemplary man and a good citizen in his own county of Washoe.

Try them once and you will use no other.”

70 Years Ago

Motion picture. The filming of “Margie” will start at the University of Nevada campus, according to Twentieth Century Fox. The pay is $7.50 per day for extras, $3.50 per day for old automobiles, and $1 per day for bicycles. Only members in good standing with Associated Students of the University of Nevada will be employed.

USS Nevada’s Silver: Silver service of the battleship USS Nevada should be restored to Nevada when the veteran fighting ship is used as a target for atomic bomb tests. Sen. Tasker L. Oddie has written to Nevada’s senator and representatives asking them to introduce a bill in Congress to accomplish this purpose. The silver service is fashioned of precious metal from Nevada mines and is the handsomest of any of the ships in the Navy. The only way it can be returned to the state is through an act of Congress. (Now on display at Nevada State Museum).

50 Years Ago

Census. The population of Nevada has jumped by 58 percent in the five years since the last official census to 489,971. Nevada’s population should top 500,000 by this summer, according to Jack Howell, director of the Commerce Department’s field office in Reno. (U.S. Census Bureau reports in 2014 that population is 2,839,099).
