The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those who made the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada’s William N. Pennington Teen Center, which officially opened last week,a reality. And of course to the William N. Pennington Foundation for providing the bulk of the funding for the center.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Jeanne Ross and Mark Theriault who turned a lot in Carson City into a self-sustaining community garden.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City’s Ryan Maw for advancing to the academy stage of the television show “So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation.”

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City’s Krysta Palmer for finishing fourth in synchronized 10-meter platform and advancing to the individual platform finals at the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City’s Bryn Lehman and Lander Smith for advancing to the National High School Rodeo Finals and National Junior High School Rodeo Finals, respectively.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson City Sheriff’s Department for hosting the Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge this weekend and to all the motorcycle cops who participated in the event.
