New water, sewer rates go into effect in Carson City Friday

New water and sewer rates go into effect July 1.

The monthly water base charge for a typical single-family home is going from $24.15 for the first 2,000 gallons to $25.72 for the first 1,000 gallons.

The next 4,000 gallons are now $1.61 per 1,000 gallon versus $1.44 per 1,000 gallons for next 3,000 gallons.

After that, rates rise from $2.75 to $2.92 per 1,000 gallons for next 25,000 gallons, and from $4.59 to $4.76 per 1,000 gallons for over 30,000 gallons.

Water rates for commercial users are going from $3.01 to $3.28 per 1,000 gallons after the first 1,000 gallons and up to 18,000 gallons; from $3.19 to $3.37 per 1,000 gallons for the next 30,000 gallons; and dropping from $3.82 to $3.69 per 1,000 gallons above 49,000 gallons.

Rates for multi-family residential above 49,000 gallons also went down, from $2.55 per 1,000 gallons to $2.28.

Those reductions were made because FCS Group, the consultant which conducted the rate study before rates were changed, found those users were paying more for their cost of service.

The flat rate for sewer for a single-family home is going from $33.01 to $36.61 while the commercial base rate is rising from $27.60 to $34.03 and the volume charge per 1,000 gallons is increasing from $5.03 to $5.82 for low-strength commercial and from $7.91 to $9.73 for high-strength commercial.

The changes are in the fourth year of a five-year, phased-in hike in water and sewer rates approved by the Board of Supervisors in September, 2013.

The jump in rates allowed the city to issue bonds to pay for $30 million in long-delayed maintenance at the more than 50 year-old Carson City Water Resource Recovery Facility on Fifth Street.

K.G. Walters Construction/Q&D; Construction are the contractors on the project, which broke ground in March and is expected to be completed in 2018.

All the new rates can be found on the Carson City website at carson.org/government/departments-g-z/public-works/utility-billing-water-sewer once they go into effect. Users also received notice in their recent bill from Carson City Public Works. For more information, call 887-2355.
