Artist Scott MacLeod works with a group to create a ship model art piece using found objects, such as brass bits, rusted iron, fishing poles, wire and salvaged wood. He is offering free art and writing workshops next month in Silver City.
An Oakland, Calif., artist is visiting Silver City to help build a found-object model of a ship using driftwood, rusted iron, fishing poles, wire, salvaged wood and other materials.
Scott MacLeod, an artist and writer, is leading the free art workshop Wednesdays through April 27 at the Silver City Schoolhouse.
Anyone who would like to help build the ship can drop by. MacLeod said the Silver City community can keep the ship once it’s complete.
The artist is also leading a writing workshop on Mondays, April 4, 11, 18 and 25. The workshop — whose emphasis is on ways to tell a life story — includes readings and open discussions.
“I’m here in Silver City trying to find the final written form for volumes of journals and other writing I’ve done over the years. I think a casual workshop to discuss how one settles on a form for one’s own stories would be useful for me, and hopefully for some of the local community. Come join me for weekly discussion and readings,” MacLeod said.
The visiting artist has been presenting live, time-based, conceptual and static work in the San Francisco Bay Area and internationally since 1979. His fiction, poetry, theater and critical writings have been published in the United States and abroad, and he has co-produced several international cultural exchange projects between the United States, France, Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia. His work is archived at the Avant Writing Collection of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Library of Ohio State University, Columbus and the Experimental Writing Collection of University at Buffalo, New York, and is collected by the Contemporary Museum, Hawaii, the Anne Frank House, Amsterdam, and many private collectors.
The free art and writing projects are sponsored by the Resident Artist Program in Silver City, with additional support from Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties.
The residency program invites artists from other regions of Nevada or from other states or nations to reside in the community for up to four months in exchange for offering free public performances, exhibitions, workshops and other events in the community.
