Gardnerville’s Douglas County Community and Senior Center hosting fencing classes

Steven Klekar is offering fencing classes for ages 13 and up at the Douglas County Community and Senior Center, 1329 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville.

Historical Spanish fencing is offered from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays through May 25. The class also meets at the same time on Wednesdays, June 1-29; July 13-27; and Aug. 3-31.

Classical fencing is planned from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, May 3-31; June 7-28; July 12-26; and Aug. 2-30.

Swordsmanship free play and fencing practice is planned from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, May 5 through Aug. 25, except Thursday, July 7. The class offers the opportunity to continue practicing swordsmanship and fencing skills. All students must have completed a Douglas County Parks and Recreation fencing class or provide proof of prior fencing experience.

Students must provide their own fencing gloves. They are asked to wear tennis shoes and a long-sleeved T-shirt. Fencing and safety equipment will be provided.

Register at the center. There is an $8 drop-in fee for anyone who does not register in advance. For more information, call 775-782-5500, ext. 1.

A beginner foil fencing tournament for ages 13-18 is at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at the Douglas County Community and Senior Center. The cost is $20. For more information, call Klekar at 775-267-1687 or Douglas County Parks and Recreation at 775-782-5500.
