Fallon coach Rich Evans got exactly what he wanted for the Greenwave boys golf club earlier than anticipated. But he isn’t done there.

The Wave boys golfers, after finishing third in the Genoa tournament, have cemented their spot in the top three teams with a 447.5 team average, one point behind Elko (448.5) in second while Spring Creek is in first with a sizable lead (416.7). This means the Wave, as part of the top three, will be competing as a team in Las Vegas on Tuesday for the first time since 2011 when Fallon won the title.

Evans, however, with one more league meet in Truckee today, has a chance to close the two point distance between Fallon and Elko to go in as the No. 2 seed. The tournament will be held at the Old Greenwood golf course in Truckee at 12:30 p.m. this afternoon.

The Wave finished third (439), 10 strokes behind Elko at second (429) while Spring Creek took first (397) in the Genoa tournament.

“The weather was extremely poor, raining quite a bit the week prior,” he said. “But we ended up having a great day on a challenging course. The kids did well, finishing one point ahead of how we did at the Spring Creek tournament, so I’m pretty happy about that.”

With individual scores still in play, Fallon’s Raymond Plasse is third in the league’s individual roster averaging 81.6, followed closely by Fallon’s Kelvin Canne at sixth (82.4). Plasse and Canne, both returning from the individual state tournament last year, have one last chance to cement their place in the individual standings, but the top six from non-qualifying teams will be competing in the individual tournament.

In light of a definite spot in the team competition, however, this week also marks the last qualifier of the season for Fallon’s junior varsity golfers to move up to varsity in time for state. Evans said the Wave’s Morgan McAlexander and Dakota Welch, both of whom took second and third respectively in a recent JV tournament, both show promise.

“They are definitely some upcoming talent we’re excited to have,” Evans said. “We’ve locked into state at third in league by one point with a chance to tie or take second at Truckee. A lot is riding on this tournament.”
