LAS VEGAS — Nevada higher education regents are appointing the former provost of UNLV to replace retiring Chancellor Dan Klaich.

The board voted unanimously Friday to hire John Valery White as acting chancellor, effective June 3. His contract includes a base annual salary of $303,000 and another $42,000 in annual perks, including a car and housing allowance.

He won’t be able to apply to be the permanent chancellor.

The move comes after regents approved an early retirement deal for Klaich, who came under fire for his role in developing a college funding formula.

A Las Vegas Review-Journal investigation examining Klaich’s emails raised concerns that he misled lawmakers about the relationship between his staff and their consultant during the process.

Klaich will be paid through the duration of his contract, which ends next summer.
