Carson City requires candidates and other groups to take down all political signs within 14 days after the election.

This year, that’s Nov. 22.

The Carson City code is even more strict than the Nevada Department of Transportation which gives 30 days following an election to remove all political signs. The rule applies even on private property if the sign is within 660 feet of a state road.

“It’s about safety,” said NDOT Director Rudy Malfabon. “Signs that distract drivers, block the view of motorists, resemble official traffic signs or interfere with maintenance of our roadsides are not safe.

In Carson City, violation is a misdemeanor potentially punishable by $1,000 fine and/or six months in jail.
