Spring Creek rallies for late-game win

Spring Creek won a wild Northern 3A football game Friday at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex, defeating Fallon 42-36 before a well-attended homecoming crowd.

After Fallon regained the lead 36-34 with 2:23 left in the game on a 1-yard run from Cade Vercellotti, Elko marched down the field and converted on a crucial fourth-down play to keep the drive going. With 7 seconds left, Spring Creek quarterback Jon Jund threaded the ball to receiver Dakota Larson for a 12-yard score. Jason Painter ran the ball in for the 2-point conversion to seal the win and remain on top of the standings with an 8-0 record. Fallon drops to 4-4.

Vercellotti’s 4-yard run in the first quarter gave the Wave the first score of the game, and with the conversion, Fallon led 8-0. The Spartans tied the game on Sheldon Wilkinson’s 3-yard run and a 2-point conversion.

Conner Nelson and the Wave struck again on a 6-yard pass,and the 2-point conversion was good for a 16-8 lead. Jund passed for his first touchdown in the second quarter but the conversion failed and Fallon led 16-14. Fallon scored two more first-half touchdowns, and Spring Creek had one as the Wave took a 10-point lead at halftime, 30-20.

Jund threw for a touchdown and then ran for 4 yards as Spring Creek grabbed its first lead of the game, 34-30.
