Ken Brown is an LTD of tax insurance in Carson City.

But when Nevada Day Inc. needed help balancing checkbooks for their events, they looked to Brown for assistance.

Because of his help, Brown is known as one of the longtime volunteers of making Nevada Day possible.

“I enjoy helping out,” he said. “I enjoy seeing everyone coming downtown to celebrate the day we got into the union.”

During the 15 years of his volunteering, Brown transitioned from keeping track of QuickBooks to coordinating the Nevada Day World Championship Single Jack Drilling Contest.

Now that he’s also the liaison of the Rock Drilling competition board, Brown’s goal is to continue to spread to word about the event to the public, especially since the event will be held at a new location, City Bank’s parking lot.

In previous years, the event was held at the Nugget Casino on Carson St.

“We have so many contestants from across the country that compete in this,” he said. “This new location will be much better since it will be closer to all festivities.”

Brown said he’s excited to see returning contestants from previous years, such as Steve McDonald from Golconda, Tom Donovan from Reno, and Emmett Hoyle of Colorado. He said the public also could expect new talent to compete this year.

The Nevada Mining Association is in part of sponsoring the contest.

“I wanted to retire from volunteering this year but I couldn’t,” Brown said. “I like to help out with other events and have things run smoothly.”

The 42nd annual competition begins at 11 a.m. at City Bank parking lot, 308 N. Curry St.

Businesses are welcome to sponsor at the event and can contact Brown at kenbrown@gbis.com.
