Historian and lecturer Mike Thomas will talk on “The Roswell UFO Incident” on Saturday, Sept 10 at Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College.
Beginning with this event and continuing through the fall and winter, lectures will begin at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m.
Thomas’ free lecture focuses on the possibility that an alien spaceship crashed near Roswell, N.M., in 1947. He will show a number of photos that he took at the crash site.
Later this month, retired NASA scientist Marla Moore leads a discussion on “Meteors. Rocks from the Sky.” Moore, who teaches Planetary Astronomy and Astrobiology at WNC, will speak Saturday, Sept. 24 about recent and past impact events on Earth, as well as what meteors are made of and where they come from. The discussion on asteroids also includes NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission exploring the asteroid Benu. A hands-on crater-making demonstration concludes the lecture.
The observatory offers free Saturday evening star viewing by telescopes, beginning at sunset. The observatory is at 2699 Van Patten Drive. For more information, call 775-445-3311.
