Protesters leave Gov. Brian Sandoval's office on Monday after reading and delivering a Moral Declaration calling on elected officials and candidates for office to embrace morally just policies like a $15/hour wage and health care for all, and to stand against racism, sexism, discrimination and attacks on voting rights.
Workers in Nevada gathered outside the Capitol Monday, part of a 28 state movement dubbed the “Higher Ground Moral Day of Action.”
Organized by the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada (PLAN) and culinary workers union members in Las Vegas, it was originally a drive to ask Nevada lawmakers and the governor to support a $15 an hour minimum wage.
But spokesman A.J. Buhay of PLAN said it has since expanded to include calls for a variety of social reforms starting with “a call for a moral revival” in America.
He said the group of about 50 would grow when more participants arrived.
Buhay said the group planned to present Gov. Brian Sandoval’s office with petitions bearing some 3,000 signatures asking the state to increase childcare subsidies for the working poor.
But they also are calling for an end to police brutality, racial justice, immigration justice and union rights.
On immigration, he said the group would also “call out Attorney General Adam Laxalt” for his actions on immigration.” He said they are hoping he will have a change of heart and drop his hard line stance on immigration.
