Prep roundup: Carson High softball evens record at 5-5

RENO — Jailene Salceido went 4-for-4 and drove in four runs to lead Carson High to an 8-7 win over Reno in a 4A make-up softball game Saturday morning.

Carson has won two of its last three and hosts Reed on Thursday at 3:45 p.m. Carson is 5-5 in league play.

“It was a great softball game,” CHS coach Shane Quilling said. “We started with a couple of errors and were down 4-2. It was nice to get two from Reno. That hasn’t happened very often. Camryn (Quilling) hit the ball well again, and Jailene (Salceido) had a couple of big hits. It would have been nice to go undefeated this week, but we had a good week.”

Carson trailed 4-1 after four, but scored one in the fifth and six in the sixth which proved to be enough to withstand Reno’s three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh.

In the fifth, Kailee Luschar singled, stole second and scored on Salceido’s single.

The Senators took the lead for good in the sixth, sending 10 batters to the plate.

Kassidy Cooley and Camryn Quilling singled to start the inning. After Terryn Earle forced pinch-runner Alex Salceido at third, Camiell Simpson singled to load the bases. A walk to Luschar made it 4-3, and Brown also scored on the play when she never came to a stop after the walk to Luschar, and scored.

The play tied the score at 4. Salceido cleared the bases with a double to center to make it 7-4, and Bella Kordonowy followed with a run-scoring hit to drive in what proved to be the game-winning run.

Reno scored three in the seventh to make it 8-7, and had the tying run at third with no outs. Luschar made the play of the game when she caught Anja Weiss’ liner and then doubled the runner off third. Two more walks loaded the bases and Brea Pacheco popped up to end the game.

Quilling collected three hits for the second straight game and Luschar added two.

Manogue sweeps Douglas

MINDEN — Bishop Manogue’s Chelie Senini had eight hits in two games and Maggie Joseph pitched 12.2 innings to win both ends of a Northern 4A doubleheader on Saturday against Douglas, 11-7 and 9-6.

Douglas (4-7 league, 5-17 overall) scored 10 of its 13 runs on home runs, including grand-slams by Haley Doughty in game one and by Jasmine McNinch in game two. McNinch also had a two-run homer in the opener.

SWIMMING

Carson boys sweep

The Senators knocked off Reno, 185-64, and Reed, 203-40 Saturday afternoon.

The Carson girls beat Reed, 188-73, and lost to Reno, 178-127.

Matthew Hill won the 50 and 100 free events, clocking a 23.11 and 50.33, respectively. Reece Canfield won the 100 fly in 56.61, Brett Kolb won the 500 free in 5:11.29, Alexander Gutierrez took the 100 back in 59.70 and Bryan Remick captured the 100 breast.

Carson had no overall individual winners in the meet, but Brena Gutierrez America was second in the 200 IM at 2:29.70 and Nicole Van Geel was second in the 500 free at 5:45.41.

The Carson boys won the 200 medley relay (1:48.32), the 200 free relay (1:37.26) and the 400 free relay (3:43.96).

The Carson girls took the 200 free relay and were second in the 400 free relay.

BASEBALL

Huskies edge Tigers

RENO — Christian Chamberlain singled to start a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh inning and then scored on J.B. Liessmann’s single to give Reno a 5-4 walk-off win over Douglas on Saturday.

Douglas (7-5 league, 9-7 overall) held leads of 3-0 and 4-3, only to see Reno (9-3, 18-4) rally to win.

Hunter Simpson started on the mound for Douglas and allowed four runs (three earned) over 4.1 innings. Chamberlain came on to pitch 2 innings in relief of Austin Whan and earn credit for the win.

Tristan Futch doubled and scored on Riley Wilkinson’s single to spark a three-run second inning rally for Douglas. Wilkinson went 2-for-3.

Wallace wins high jump

with season-best mark

RENO — Greg Wallace jumped a season-best 6-feet 3-inches to win the boys high jump at the annual Northwest Invite Saturday at McQueen High School.

The Carson girls finished fifth with 62 points and the boys were tied for ninth with 38 points.

Harry Meyer turned in fourth-place finishes in both hurdle events, clocking a 16.82 and a 43.42. He also ran a leg on Carson’s second-place 800-meter relay team. The 1600 relay quartet of Chance Smith, Darryll Heyward, Brandon Copeland and Jonny Barahona ran a 3:40.43 to finish fourth.

Carson was seventh in the 3200 relay, clocking an 8:54.05 thanks to the efforts of Adam Flaten, Hunter Rauh, Jayson Legott and Trinity Medina.

On the girls side, Abigail Pradere won the 800 in 2:20.57 and took second in the 1500 with a 4:49.91, a PR.

Abbey Paulson was fourth in the triple jump with a PR of 34-4 1/2. She was sixth in the long jump with a PR of 15-10. She also teamed with Erica Basa, Abigail Cowan and Anya Woodbury to finish fourth in the 400 relay in 52.53. Woodbury was fifth in the triple jump at 33-8 1/2 and ninth in the long jump with a PR of 15-6.

Freshman Gabriella Fernandez finished fourth at 3000 meters, clocking a PR of 11:15.58. Azlynn McFadden took fifth in the discus with a PR of 113-9. Annika Wick was fifth in the 400 with a PR of 63.48.

JV BASEBALL

Carson splits with McQueen

Carson and McQueen split two games this week.

On Thursday, Carson scored three in the ninth to grab a 13-10 win, and McQueen came back on Saturday to grab a 6-4 win.

Josh Buchan went 3-for-5, and Ryan Wright, Gryphon Matthies, Delsin Roberts and Garritt Benavidez all had two hits. Wright, Benavidez and Roberts also drove in two runs.

Roberts went 3-for-4 in the loss to the Lancers.
