100 Years ago

New High School Site — Regarding the site for the new building, the Board of Education decided to accept the offer of C.W. Verplank for about 13 ½ acres at the south end of Maine street. This tract will give a frontage of approximately 545 feet on Maine street and will extend through to Taylor street. The main building of the High School will be erected fronting on Maine street opposite the old creamery building. The purchase price of this property was $10,000. The arrangement provides for the opening of a street along the north side of this tract which street will be an extension of the street front of the old creamery building extending through from Maine to Taylor streets.

Fraudulent Endless Chain Letters on the $4.50 Petticoat Free — A number of ladies in this vicinity have been attracted by the alluring proposition of receiving a $4.50 silk petticoat free by writing five letters to friends and complied with the request. Postmaster Likes has received instructions from the P.O. Department to not only intercept letters addressed to this concern, but to decline to issue money orders in their favor, it having been declared fraudulent by post office inspectors.

Picked up on Desert after Three Days — After wandering on the desert for three days a man giving his mane as James Quirk was brought to Fallon by Sheriff R.J. Vannoy and is being held here until further information can be secured. Residents at Westgate had telephoned the sheriff that the man had been seen frequently in that vicinity for three days and that he had been acting strangely. He told Vannoy that he had been in Portola and that his home is in Chicago, also that he feared violence to his person. He gave his age as 45.

Churchill County Planning Commission Holds a Public Hearing to Discuss Land Use Plan — Some three hundred county residents –so many that the gathering had to move to the West End school from the courthouse that couldn’t contain them—met last Tuesday evening with the Churchill County Planning Commission to carry out the first discussion on the proposed county ordinance creating a Land Use Plan. The one and one-half hour discussion on the Land Use Plan with in the unincorporated area of this county was probably the most spirited public meeting ever held in Churchill County.

In The Local Limalight — Fallon has had a distinguished visitor in the person of Robert Mitchum of Hollywood motion picture fame. He was here with Wayne Cutlip of Reno and formerly of Fallon, and a well-known horseman. The two men were dinner guests on two occasions at Stockman’s.
