One of Israel’s famous spies, Eli Cohen, successfully entered the upper echelons of the Syrian government as an undercover Mossad agent. The secrets he obtained proved crucial to Israel’s victory in the Six-Day War. It is 46 years since Eli Cohen was discovered by the Syrian government and publicly hanged at the age of 41.
The film “Undercover in Damascus,” which chronicles Cohen’s dangerous and dramatic mission, will be screened at 7:30 p.m. May 4 at the Chabad at the Ski Run Marina at Lake Tahoe.
The film will be followed by insights by Cohen’s youngest and only surviving brother, Avraham Cohen, who will reveal behind-the-scenes insight into Eli Cohen’s story. Avraham will share his family’s experience as well as the ongoing struggle to have Eli Cohen’s remains returned to Israel.
Before retiring in 2009, Avraham was the senior economist for the industrial development bank of Israel, in charge of feasibility studies for the electronics, high-tech and defense industries. He currently does volunteer work for the Weizmann Historical Archive and is active in the Association for the Preservation of the Legacy of Eli Cohen.
