County announces three new art exhibits

Churchill County welcomes three new art exhibits on display at their administration building, 155 N. Taylor St.

The Celebrate Us program provides opportunities for local artists to share their creative talents with the community by displaying artwork in a public space. Celebrate Us Coordinator Julie Guerrero said the program goal is to showcase local talent right here in our own community, and provide opportunities for hobby artists and professionals alike.

“I especially enjoy when a new artist comes along who has never put their artwork out there,” Guerrero said. “It is very gratifying, and provides a big confidence boost when they finally take that step.”

Brand new to the Celebrate Us program is artist Linda Jeffers-Spencer who acquired an early interest in art through her grandmother Thelma Calhoun, a well-known Carson City artist.

“From the time we could use a pencil or a paintbrush she was teaching us art,” Jeffers-Spencer said about her grandmother.

With a busy life raising her daughter and running a successful award-winning taxidermy business, Jeffers-Spencer said she didn’t have much time to devote to her art. Now that her daughter is graduating from high school and her husband recently retired, she decided it was time to start painting again.

The artist’s beautiful watercolor paintings are one of the new exhibits on display in the county building.

Other new exhibits this month are courtesy of photographers Dennis Doyle and Kristen Kabrin. These are the second exhibits Doyle and Kabrin have put on display in the administration building. Doyle is a long-time professional photographer from Churchill County, whose talents bring out the “extra” ordinary and “unique” glory in natural scenes, the program shared; his intent is to stir the deep beauty in this world with his viewers, and deliver them his vision and awe.

Kabrin’s love of the outdoors and adventure shines through in her photography.

“Landscape photography is all about finding the simplicity in life for me,” she said. “I like to create an image that brings out a longing to escape back to nature, or to find that feeling of home.”
