Prep Roundup: Carson High girls, Douglas High girls and boys lose

Carson High’s girls basketball team dug itself a huge hole to start the game, and was never able to recover.

Reed bolted to a 22-2 lead and rolled to a 65-40 win over the Senators on Tuesday night in a 4A crossover game at Morse Burley Gym.

The Senators dropped to 2-4 overall heading into Friday’s home game against Hug at 5:15 p.m.

Carson coach Melissa Larsen was upbeat after the game, especially after watching her team scrap hard throughout the contest. Lily Bouza, one of Carson’s top scorers, was sick and missed the game. Dajarrah Navarro suffered a sprained ankle in practice and didn’t play.

“We played much better in the second half,” Larsen said. “The press (early) frazzled us. They are an aggressive team, and we started being aggressive and attacking them, and we got them in some foul trouble.

“Turnovers (36 in all) and their second shots hurt us. We started to play hard about the middle of the second quarter.”

Carson got some solid play from freshman Abby Golik, who led the team with 12 points off the bench. Tezia Boice, Haley Garver and Bella Kordonowy all scored eight points.

“Abby worked her behind off,” Larsen said. “The first time she went in she got frazzled a little bit. She got used to the physical part and the speed of the game.”

Reed, leading 4-2, went on an 18-0 run bridging the final 5:40 of the first period and the first 1:30 of the second period before Carson scored two from the line by Kordonowy to make it 22-4.

Golik put together a nice string of six points to help slice the deficit to 45-27 in the third quarter, but Reed scored five straight in the final 1:39 to make it 50-27 after three.

Spanish Springs 71, Douglas 39

MINDEN — Five players scored in double figures to help Spanish Springs to a 71-39 win at Douglas on Tuesday.

Spanish Springs (3-0 league, 6-3 overall) scored 12 unanswered points to end the first quarter with a 16-9 lead in the Northern 4A crossover contest.

Hannah Carr scored 11 and Ashlynn Campbell added 10 to lead Douglas (1-2 league, 3-5 overall).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Spanish Springs 86, Douglas 53

MINDEN — Jalen Townsell poured in 30 points and Spanish Springs connected on 15 3-pointers on its way to an 86-53 win at Douglas on Tuesday.

Townsell, a 6-foot-7 senior, sank five shots from beyond the arc and scored 20 points in the first quarter as Spanish Springs (3-0 league, 7-2 overall) took a 20-14 lead in the Northern 4A crossover game.

Douglas (2-1 league, 2-6 overall) was still even at 22 two minutes into the second quarter before Spanish Springs took control. The Cougars broke the game open with 33 points in the third quarter.

Josh Carillo scored 10 points to lead Douglas. Andrew Collins and Jason Gray added nine points each and Ian Ozolins eight for the Tigers.

Sophomore Cordell Stinson also had 15 points for the Cougars.

Senators edge Reed

SPARKS — Four players reached double figures to lead Carson past the Raiders, 65-58, Tuesday.

Joey Sommers led the way with 17 points followed by Will Breeding with 14, and Christian Ortega and Nathan Smothers added 12 apiece. Breeding also pulled down 10 rebounds.

JV GIRLS

Raiders edge CHS

The Raiders outlasted the Senators, 41-36, in a hard-fought game Tuesday in Carson.

Nancy Alvarez led Carson with 12 points.

WRESTLING

Carson hosts Manogue today

The Senators look to improve to 2-0 in Sierra League duals when they host Bishop Manogue today at 6:30 p.m. in Morse Burley Gym.

The Senators have been led in the early going by Jesse Case (182 pounds) and Kyle Rudy (138 pounds). Rudy won his weight class at the Cody Louck Invitational in Winnemucca last weekend.
