Environmental Stewardship Saves Energy

Energy improvements at Naval Air Station Fallon are projected to reduce base energy consumption and save millions over the next decade.

Using a third-party financed project, 47 buildings will receive upgrades to interior LED lighting and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

“These energy efficient upgrades are projected to reduce our energy consumption by 13 percent which is approximately 2,600 megawatt hours (MWH) a year in electrical savings,” said Commanding Officer, Capt. David Halloran.

The improvements, along with the recent runway lighting upgrades, are another step towards meeting the Department of the Navy’s goal of implementing energy efficient products and reducing its impact on the environment.

In Dec. of 2015, NASF completed a 6 month project that converted all runway lights to energy efficient LEDs. The LED runway lights saved the base more than 161 MWH over the last year.

“At NASF, we are concerned about our impact, not just on tax payers as a whole, but also on our impact to our natural resources,” Halloran said. “It’s all part of a larger plan where we are working to take steps to be the best steward of the environment we can be.”

The 47 buildings selected cover a wide range of infrastructure aboard NASF, to include heavy use facilities, MWR and Navy Exchange buildings, and a number of Navy Gateway Inns and Suites.

According to energy.gov, LED lights typically use up to 80 percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and can last up to 25 times longer.

The Construction is schedule to be completed by June 2018.
