Ready to end the season with a bang

The Greenwave basketball teams’ regular season comes to a close this weekend after taking on the Truckee Wolverines.

The girls’ game starts at 1 p.m. tomorrow, at Truckee High School, and the boys play at 2:30 p.m. The boys’ team goes into the game with a standing of 9-14 overall and 6-9 in league. The girls stand undefeated in league and 21-3 overall.

Boys basketball coach Brad Barton said his team was feeling confident about the Truckee game; he said the game was mainly about their momentum going into playoffs.

“We’re already locked into our spot in playoffs,” he said. “Whatever happens against Truckee happens. What we don’t want to do is lose momentum in this game, so we want to play a game where we’re firing on all cylinders and heading in the right directions for tournament play.”

However, Barton hasn’t completely dismissed Truckee and they have considered their game earlier in the season. The coach recalled Truckee surprised them and stayed in the 2-3 zone the whole game. He said they would try to play at a quicker tempo and not let the Wolverines disrupt their flow.

The Greenwave plans to use the same game plan they used against Spring Creek in Truckee. Barton said the plan was to win in Truckee as a warm up to the regional tournament.

Barton said he’s excited for the boys basketball program and its future. He said the young team has lots of skill and potential. Only two members of the team graduate at the end of the year and most of the rest can play for three more years.

“They’re picking it up fast and throwing fast, so we’re excited about the program and how it looks for the future,” Barton said. “I’m happy with the growth of the program and the leadership on the team.”

Girls coach Anne Smith said her team is focused and taking things one game at a time to improve on areas of weakness.

“Every game we try to get a little better and better,” she said.

According to Smith, the girls are focused on their goal. She said they’re working to take care of little details and focusing on the things that set them apart from other teams.

The Lady Wave won’t be overlooking Truckee. Even at this stage, Smith wants the team to treat the game as though it could change their place in the standings.

Both teams are locked into their standing in the league going into playoffs. The Lady Wave will enter the regional tournament in first place and the Greenwave in fifth.

The boys have their first game on Thursday, Feb. 16 at Lowry. Their first game will be against Spring Creek or Fernley, depending on how other games go. The girls will play Friday after the other seeds have played.
