Saddle-trained wild horse adoption event planned in Carson City

Fourteen wild horses and one burro from herd management areas on BLM-administered public lands will be offered for adoption at an auction on Feb. 25.

The event, hosted by the Bureau of Land Management and Nevada Department of Corrections – Silver State Industries, will be at Northern Nevada Correctional Center, 1721 Snyder Ave.

The animals are trained by inmates in the Nevada Department of Corrections program and receive at least 120 days of training.

The saddle-trained, once-wild horses range in age from 5 to 9 years old and vary in weight and color; the burro is a one year old female from the McGee Mountains herd management area in Nevada.

Viewing will begin at 9 and a competitive-bid adoption, conducted by an auctioneer, will follow at 10 a.m. The starting bid for all the animals is $150.

Attendees are asked to enter the facility from the north side and watch for signs and event personnel at the south end. The public is prohibited from wearing blue clothing, blue jeans, tank tops or shorts at the auction. Also, no cell phones, cameras or recording devices.
