The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Charlie and Karen Abowd and to all those who supported and helped organize Concert Under the Stars, which benefits the Greenhouse Project. And of course to the performers, The Family Stone and Lydia Pense with her band, Cold Blood. And to the title sponsor Carson Tahoe Health and other sponsors including NV Energy, Gold Dust West, Dick Campagni’s Carson City Toyota, Northern Nevada Toyota Dealers and Tito’s Handmade Vodka.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those who are supporting and participating in this weekend’s Senior Follies, which benefits Meals on Wheels.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Paige Spiranac, who’s playing in this weekend’s American Century Championship, for her effort in stopping cyber bullying.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Lahontan Valley News Editor Steve Ranson, who announced his retirement effective Aug. 1. The LVN and the Appeal are part of the Swift family and we here at the Appeal appreciate everything Ranson has done for us from his coverage of University of Nevada sports to military matters. We thank Ranson for his nearly 40 years of service, whether it be in the National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve or in journalism.
