CC Democrats

The Churchill County Democrats will hold their regular monthly meeting on August 10 at their regular location, the Churchill County Administration Complex on the corner of North Taylor and A streets in room 136.

They will be planning their fall activities. The meeting starts at 6 p.m.


Amodei to speak at FRW

The Fernley Republican Women (FRW) will hold its next meeting at the Fernley High School Library, 1300 Highway 95A, on Aug. 15.

A light meal will be served at 6 p.m. and the meeting will start at 6:30 p.m.

Guest speaker will be U. S. Representative Mark Amodei, who will update us on the House of Representatives plans for 2017 and his take on what is going on in Washington D.C. The public is always invited to attend.


Dementia-related behaviors

Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias can cause a person to act in different unpredictable ways that can sometimes be hard for us to understand. Join us on Aug. 9 from Noon-1 p.m. at The Homestead, 365 West A St,

The Alzheimer’s Association will be presenting on how we can better respond to our loved ones experiencing behavioral changes. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Attendance is free. Please RSVP at 775-428-2428.


High-school equivalency classes

The Fallon campus of WNC will be having registration for the next session of high-school equivalency classes on July 31 and Aug. 1.

Registration will be in Pinon Hall on both days. Attendance from 9 a.m. to noon on both days will be required to complete paperwork and testing. A mandatory orientation for the program will also be held on Aug. 3 and 4 from 9 a.m. to noon. Take this opportunity to start that change for a better tomorrow.


Logos Christian Academy

Logos Christian Academy, a small private classical Christian school, located at 665 Sheckler Road, is currently accepting applications for the 2017-18 school year. Seventh-Day Adventist School registration

Elks Lodge

Elks Lodge 2236, 93 W. Center St., is offering a fried shrimp dinner July 21. Always a complete meal and truly a bargain at $8 a place. Lounge open at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. and open stage karaoke. Open to members and guests.

Coalition parenting classes

The Churchill Community Coalition is offering parenting courses to help parents learn to use conflict resolution, good communication and anger management. Classes are held Tuesdays from 2-3 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30p p.m. in the Churchill County Building Conference Room, 485 W. B Street. We also offer a Parenting Wisely, teen & young child classes, online for free.


Calling all artists

Please join fellow artists to create art each Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the meeting room located inside the Maine Street Café, 810 S. Maine St. Our vision is to share ideas, techniques and friendships through art in a supportive and accepting environment. Bring all that you need to create your art in whatever media you prefer.


Lost and found

The Churchill County Parks and Recreation Department has a collection of lost and found items at their office, located at 325 Sheckler Road at the Churchill County Fairgrounds. If you have lost an item at the Regional Park Ballfields, fairgrounds or North Maine Ballfields, please stop by the Parks and Recreation office. Unclaimed items are donated to the local thrift stores.


Outreach work here to help

The Division of Welfare and Supportive Services will have an outreach worker located at the Churchill County Social Services building on Mondays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and alternating Mondays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The Outreach worker will be able to assist you with SNAP, Medical or TANF application, renewal of SNAP, Medical, or TANF benefits, address changes to existing cases, answer questions regarding the application process, and answer questions regarding your on-going case.


USDA Commodities

New Day of the Week Change: Commodities now will be on Tuesdays, still at the American Legion Post #16, 90 N Ada St from 9 a.m.-Noon. The next date is July 18. Please bring your Nevada photo I.D. and if necessary, proof of Churchill County residency. Also, bring your own boxes and/or carts.


Learning computers at library

Need help navigating a computer, using the library website, using the Internet, setting up an email, downloading ebooks and audiobooks, or other computer related tasks and problems?

Drop in for assistance Thursdays (beginning Aug. 10) from 9-10 a.m.

If you have never used a computer or need help finding your way around a computer, this class is for you! Learn fundamental navigation and where to find help and resources to complete tasks. Tuesday from 9-11 a.m. on Aug. 8 and Aug. 29.

Grief share support group

Grief share support group, 805 Esmeralda St. Thursday nights at 6:30 p.m. The group will provide help and encouragement after the death of a loved one.

The Blue Sky Thrift Store (formerly Fallon Humboldt Shredders) is located at 290 S. Maine St. Hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Bagged clothing sales are $4 per plastic shopping bag full of clothing available on Saturdays.

The High Desert Detachment of the Marine Corps League meets the first Saturday of each month at noon in the VFW Hall, 405 S. Al-anon, a 12-step program, meets every Wednesday and Sunday. Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. at the Churchill County Library annex. Sunday meetings in the annex are from 2-3 p.m. Another Sunday Al-anon (12-step program) meets every week from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at 1490 Grimes St.

Community reunion

Mark your calendars on the third weekend in August (Aug. 18-20) to join in the fourth annual community reunion. Alumni of all schools, teachers, support staff, families and friends are encouraged to attend.

A social at the Fallon Theatre Friday night (Aug. 18) will kick off the weekend. On Saturday there are many activities and tours planned ... open swim at the city pool, a show-n- shine car show and breakfast at the new Senior Center, a visit with Mayor Ken Tedford at City Hall to mention a few.

Free registration at Oats Park to have your name included in our reunion archive begins at 4 p.m. Many classes will have tents in the park. We will be honoring graduates from the classes of 1947-1952.

Enjoy the concert sponsored by the mayor and City Council starting at 7:30 p.m.

Extend the evening at the Oats Park Art Center’s Art Bar. A Sunday breakfast at the new Senior Center will finish the reunion weekend.

CC Republicans lunch

The Churchill County Republican Committee meets on the second Wednesday of each month at noon.

The meeting is upstairs at The Depot with lunch available for $10. The meeting is generally open to all Churchill County Republicans and other interested citizens.



Quilt fundraiser

Rhapsody in Red is this year’s 15th annual Community Quilt 2017 from the Hearts of Gold Quilters.

The quilt is the creation of Hearts of Gold Quilters and sewn by Jan Recanzone of Yerington.

The drawing will be at the annual Fallon Cantaloupe Festival and Country Fair on Aug. 27 at 3 p.m. Tickets are six for $5 or $1 each and may be purchased at 3-D Shipping, Jeff’s Postage Plus, Workman’s, Churchill County Federal Credit Union.

Storytime

Join us for Storytime at the Churchill County Library each Wednesday and Thursday at 11 a.m.; includes stories, songs and a craft. The library has hundreds of books on a wide variety of subjects for your enjoyment either in the building or at home.

Fallon Daily Bread

For over 11 years now, Epworth United Methodist Church has been home to Fallon Daily Bread, a hot meal program that is free to all who want to partake, regardless of income or ability.

Fallon Daily Bread serves meals on Monday and Thursday evenings at 5:15 p.m. at 457 Esmeralda St.

Hearts of Gold Quilters

The Hearts of Gold Quilters meets Thursdays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Fallon Convention Center, 100 Campus Way.

All quilters are welcome.

We meet weekly to make donation quilts as well as work on our own projects.

Child support enforcement

Child support enforcement services are available through the Churchill County District Attorney’s Office. Contact the Churchill County DA, Child Support Division at 775-423-8423.

The staff may be able to help establish parentage and help obtain a child support order. Pick up an application at the Churchill County Child Support Office at 165 N. Ada St. Or go to www.churchillcounty.org and follow the links to the DA’s Child Support Division.

The office is open M-F from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.




Fallon Horseman’s Association

Fallon Horseman’s Association holds monthly meetings the first Thursday of each month at Pizza Factory, 2199 W. Williams Ave.

Anyone interested in our open horse shows and other events is welcome to attend.


Caregiver support groups

The Alzheimer’s Association’s Caregiver Support Groups are designed to provide emotional and social support for caregivers through regularly scheduled meetings.

Participants develop methods and skills to solve problems.

The groups encourage caregivers to maintain their own personal, physical and emotional health, as well as optimally care for the person living with Alzheimer’s disease or a related form of dementia.

Open discussion with a trained facilitator. Free of charge and walk-ins welcome. Date: Second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. Time: 10:30 a.m.–noon. Location: The Homestead. 365 West A St. Facilitators: Candy Foster & Jason Thornton.

Visit our unique shop located inside Banner Churchill Community Hospital on Wast Williams Avenue.

We sell a variety of items including purses, jewelry, baby items and See’s Candy.

We are owned and operated by BCCH Hospital Auxiliary, a nonprofit organization.

Proceeds benefit BCCH and other community health events.
