Daryl Chin offers poetry reading

The Churchill Arts Council will present a poetry reading with Daryl Chinn on Saturday in the galleries at the Oats Park Art Center.

The event will be from 5-7 p.m. and is free and open to the public. There will be a meet-the-author reception from 5-6 p.m. and the reading will begin at 6 p.m.

Daryl Chinn holds a master’s degree from John Hopkins University and has published poems in the “Florida Review,” the “Greenfield Review” and many other periodicals. His poetry collection “Soft Parts of the Back” was published by the University Press of Florida.

He’s also edited four anthologies for California Poets in the Schools and has worked in a number of artists-in-residence programs in several western states including Wyoming, Alaska, Nevada, Oregon and California. He’s taught literature and creative writing in Churchill County Schools for more than two decades.

SOUNDS OF HAWAII

Tickets are now on sale for the performance by Kahulanui which is coming up on March 25 at the Arts Center.

Kahulanui are known as Hawaii’s Kings of Swing and were nominated for a 2014 Grammy Award for Best Regional Roots Album.

The group’s name means “The Big Dance” and the band’s repertoire has been passed down through three generations of island musicians. In the 1920s and 1930s there were several orchestras playing Hawaiian swing and the group draws upon these traditions which they blend with the Jazz/Big Band Swing musical styles brought to the Aloha State by U.S. servicemen during World War II.

The nine piece ensemble — four horns plus guitar, bass, ukulele, drums and steel — crafts new arrangements of vintage mid-century songs, utterly contemporary yet steeped in tradition and their shows often include traditional dancers on stage.

The group will hold a free and open-to-the-public conversation on Hawaiian musical traditions in the Center’s Art Bar at 3 p.m. on the day of the performance. These conversations provide a great opportunity to talk with performers and musicians in an informal, up close and personal setting.

Doors for the evening performance will open at 7 p.m. and the performance will begin at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $17 for CAC members, $20 for nonmembers and can be picked up at Jeff’s Copy Express on Maine Street, ITT @ NAS Fallon or by calling Churchill Arts at 775-423-1440.
