Lyon County burn season open until Sunday, May 21

Lyon County residents have just over a week to participate in Central Lyon County Fire Protection District’s burn program.

Fire officials said the wet winter has contributed to a prolific crop of cheat grass, which, along with other weeds, is a potential wildfire fuel.

Officials said a stray spark, unattended campfire, or even a carelessly discarded cigarette or hot catalytic converter on a vehicle can start a wildfire.

Preparation for the upcoming fire season includes maintaining a defensible space by clearing combustible debris through a controlled burn.

Burn permits issued through LCFPD expire May 21 and are available to help residents reduce fuel loads and clear weeds and debris from their yards.

Additionally, the fire district’s trailer drop program is available to help residents create and maintain defensible space.

Seasonal firefighters will deliver a trailer to those who request help and remove it after it’s filled with flammable debris collected in the yard.

Fire official said almost 1,000 residents have participated so far, with no escaped burns and only a few smoke-check calls.
