CHS student named U.S. Presidential Scholar

Carson High School’s Curtis Basa is on the list of U.S. Presidential Scholars released by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.

Basa is one of 161 high school students from around the nation honored for outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, service and contribution to school and community.

Established in 1964, the program awards two students from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, as well as 15 chosen at-large, 20 U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts and 20 Presidential Scholars in Career and Technical Education.

Basa, who was awarded U.S. Presidential Scholar in Career and Technical Education, and other recipients will be honored June 18-20 in Washington, D.C.

Recipients have the opportunity to give the name of their most influential teacher who then is awarded with a personal letter from the secretary of education. The teacher chosen by Basa is CHS’s Curtis Kortemeier.

Other recipients from Nevada are Melissa J. Bak and Ian M. Oh, both of Reno.
