Consort Canzona, a select group of instrumentalists and singers specializing in early music, will present “An Early Music Christmas” concert for the holiday season at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1.

The performance will be at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 Highway 395, just south of Best Buy. Admission is free, and donations are welcome.

The concert features a setting by Michael Praetorius, who lived from 1571 to 1621, of a traditional Christmas Carol, In Dulci Jubilo, which dates from the Middle Ages.

Another highlight will be Personent Hodie (On This Day Earth Shall Ring), a German carol from 1360 arranged by contemporary English composer John Rutter in 1974.

The program also will include Mirabile Mysterium, Ave Maria, Es Ist Ein Ros Entsprungen, and other selections.

Carson City musician Sharon Kientz formed Consort Canzona in 2009 for recorders, cello, and harpsichord. Singers were added in 2011. The group is directed by Lora Mills, who is also Assistant Director of the UNR Chamber Singers.
