Senior duo aims for state glory for Fallon

Plain and simple, they want to be the best.

The senior golfing duo of Kelvin Cann and Chance Wood, who rank in the top six in the 3A Northern, have their eyes set on not only being the best in the region, but they want to finish their final year on top of the state.

“I want to win state and be the best player in the north,” said Cann, who won Wednesday’s Lowry tournament in sudden death and is ranked No. 2 in the region. “I also want to shoot under par in a couple tournaments. Any day, everything will come together and I will shoot my best round ever.”

Cann invested in working with Marty Davis during the offseason and he said his game improved greatly and has him in solid position for next month’s state tournament in Las Vegas.

With the help and knowledge of Marty Davis, Cann’s game has improved tremendously over the last year. But Cann likes to have fun with his teammates. Richard Evans, who stepped down after last season, kept the practices light and the team on its toes with practical jokes. Being a senior and leader on the team in coach Elaine Adams’ first year, Cann wanted to continue that fun tradition.

“This year I have played a few pranks on my teammates and my coach, but I have also kept focus on playing golf, getting better and helping the rest of the team become better players,” Cann said.

After his career finishes, Cann plans on attending UNLV in the fall and wants to study hotel management with a focus in professional golf management. He envisions coming back to the Oasis of Nevada to become a golf pro at the Fallon golf course.

“I love Fallon. I plan on coming back after college,” Cann said. “But, I want to get away and experience something new. Las Vegas is a totally different animal than anything in Northern Nevada. I felt like UNR is too close. Also, they offer a golf management program and that is the main reason for me going there.”

For Wood, he wants to be standing with his teammate as one of the top golfers in the state. And he wants to beat him.

“My goals were to beat my friend and to have my handicap in the single digits,” said Wood, who’s ranked No. 6 in the region. “Trying to do this would be very hard but it’s attainable. Hard work and determination can get you anything.”

When the ball sinks for the final time in his career, however, Wood is proud of his accomplishments.

“I wanted to be one of the highest achievers by only starting and trying golf sophomore year and making it to be one of the top players in the school,” Wood said. “Everyone said it would be hard and I wouldn’t do it, but I’m right there about to make it.”

Like Cann, Wood has his plan set for after college. He wants to attend Great Basin in Elko to get an Associate’s degree in electrical technology so he can work in the mines.

“They offer great opportunities that I would like to pursue,” Wood said. “It’ll be a hard and fun lifestyle but I can’t wait for it.”
