Amodei sets town halls for vets; favors background checks

Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Nev., has announced plans to hold two town hall meetings for veterans in his district.

The Reno town hall will be held Aug. 15 from 1-3 p.m. at the Washoe County Administration Building.

He will follow that with a town hall in Winnemucca on Aug. 21 from 9-11 a.m. at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Winnemucca.

“These town hall meetings are an opportunity for veterans to come out and discuss challenges, offer suggestions and address their concerns free of any agenda,” he said.

Amodei said the meetings will also give vets a chance to speak with VA representatives as well as his staff about the help they can provide. Attending along with Amodei and his staff will be Lisa Howard, head of the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System at the Reno meeting. Jerome Washington, of the Department of Veterans Affairs will attend both the Reno and Winnemucca sessions.

Also, in an interview with The Nevada Independent, Amodei said he “supports gun background checks and is troubled that the voter-approved ballot question has not been implemented.”

The Independent featured the interview on its website on Tuesday.

Amodei was referring to the state’s failure to implement the background check law passed by Nevada voters in 2016.

Voters approved the Question 1 background check initiative in November 2016, but the law hasn’t yet been enforced

The background check law passed by Nevada voters calls for the state to require background checks on all gun sales in Nevada, with reasonable exceptions for family, hunting and self-defense.
