Senior duo wins Idaho titles to lead Wave wrestling

Going against some of the best competition in the north region, the Greenwave wrestlers crowned two champions in the Wiley Dobbs Invitational on Saturday in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Seniors Sean McCormick (170 pounds) and Ben Dooley (285) each won his weight class to stay undefeated on the young year, while junior Tommy McCormick (160) finished second.

Fallon, which also had wrestlers competing in Lovelock, competes in this weekend’s Reno Tournament of Champions at the Reno Events Center. The Greenwave returns to Reno next week for the Sierra Nevada Classic.

After opening with three-straight falls, Sean McCormick scored a 6-0 decision over Jerome (Idaho) High School’s Payton Ringling in the semifinal. McCormick edged Kuna (Idaho) High School’s Cedar Miller, 12-8, to win his second tournament title this season.

Like McCormick, Dooley captured his second tournament title. Dooley opened with four-straight falls to reach the championship and needed sudden death to come out on top. Dooley won, 4-2, over Gooding (Idaho) High School’s Jake McGinnis.

Tommy McCormick scored two falls, a major decision and a close, four-point win to earn a trip the championship match. McCormick, a returning state champ, lost 5-3 to Jerome High School’s Ezekial Williamson to finish second.

Wyatt Hatch (132) came close to wrestling for a medal but the sophomore settled for six team points after falling in the first period of the championship quarterfinal. Hatch, who finished 1-2, lost by decision, 7-1, in the consolation round 4.

Lucas Prinz (106) scored four team points after going through three rounds of consolation. The freshman grappler scored a win in the second consolation round before losing by fall to end the day at 1-2.

Senior Drew Kramer (145) dropped both of his bouts, including a tough loss when he was pinned late in the second period of the second round of consolation.

In the Lovelock Mustangs Invitational, Case Cornmesser (120) opened with a fall but dropped to the consolation after a loss in the quarterfinals. Cornmesser scored back-to-back falls before losing in the consolation semifinals to finish with a 3-2 record.

Josiah Rosario (123) and Ty Lainhart (195) each dropped into consolation after their first bout but won his next bout before falling in the third round to finish 1-2. Luke Sorensen (135) finished 2-2 and picked up a win in each of the championship and consolation brackets.

Isabella Leal (106) and Cody Shelton (156) were both winless in their two bouts.
