Leisure Hour Club member and historian Kim Harris will help the club begin celebrating its 123-year history with a presentation at the club’s first dinner meeting of the year on Wednesday, Sept. 19.
It all began in September 1896 when 12 people of the newly-formed Leisure Hour Club met in the rectory office of Reverend James B. Eddy of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Carson City.
Since then, hundreds of the Carson City and surrounding area’s movers and shakers, from homemakers to governors, have met monthly to learn about topics as diverse as the works of local authors, service dogs, history of underwear, and how to purchase a great diamond.
The September program will enable the club’s 100-plus members to take a look back at the group’s history as an organization which closely correlates to Carson City’s history.
Harris’s presentation will highlight many of the club’s activities, former members, and how adherence to the motto of “Let knowledge grow from more to more” has changed during the club’s history.

The meeting is preceded by a buffet dinner at 6 p.m. in the Carson Nugget Capitol Ballroom. Reservations for the meeting and dinner are required.
The Leisure Hour Club, established in September of 1896, is Carson City’s oldest continuously meeting social organization.
Celebrating its 123rd year, the organization is focused on its goal of promoting knowledge of important issues, science, music and literature.
