The Nevada Senate has passed a bill that seeks to rewrite the state’s abortion laws.

Bill sponsor Democratic Sen. Yvanna Cancela says the legislation would bring the state’s informed consent laws for abortion in line with medical best practices.

The bill would also do away with a criminal penalty for anyone who causes an abortion without the advice of a physician. It also repeals a requirement that a pregnant woman consent to an abortion without being coerced.

The Senate passed the measure in a 12-9 vote Tuesday with Democratic Sens. Mo Denis and Marcia Washington voting against the measure, joining overall Republican opposition.

The abortion legislation must pass in the Assembly before heading to the governor for approval.
