Two Churchill County High School students placed seventh out of 22 teams representing Northern Nevada, Oregon and Northern California to compete in diesel or automotive technology.
Dawson Lapp, a senior, and Caleb Haynes, a junior, represented CCHS and each received a $1,000 scholarship to the Universal Technical Institute. Participating students are eligible to win UTI scholarships as well as prizes for their classrooms. Each school may send one team for automotive and one team for diesel. Teams consist of two students — juniors or seniors.
According to automotive instructor David Gonzalez, this competition tested the students’ knowledge obtained during their automotive high school program. They competed in a hands-on and written tests in parts identification, scan-tool diagnostics, brake diagnostics and electrical systems.
“These students worked hard with me after school to help them get ready for this competition, even at home studying on the subjects covered for the competition,” Gonzalez said. “Being a new teacher and having no idea how this competition works, I am very proud of them in the experience and looking forward to more experiences like this in the future.”
