Plans moving along on new concession stand

Helped by a generous donation to build a concession stand at the Churchill County High school field, the school district’s director of maintenance said a new facility could start in early May and be finished by the end of the month.

Ozzie Henke, along with Kim Beeghly from the Greenwave Quarterback Club, updated trustees at their Wednesday meeting. When Henke first appeared before the school board in late November, he discussed plans to use volunteer labor to construct the concession stand for the high school athletic area. Trustees then voted to move forward with the plan.

Henke said he has many donors and volunteers who signed up to help with the project, which he presented an updated drawing to the trustees.

“We have finalized a drawing on what our concession stand will look like,” he said.

Henke also told trustees that Churchill County Federal Credit Union donated a check that will pay for the building. Volunteers will help with flooring, plumbing and concrete work, and a company specializing in small building will come on site and build the concession stand. Henke said Beeghly has been very diligent in rounding up volunteers.

“We’ll get a lot for our money,” he said.

Kathryn Whitaker, president of the school board, said trustees will take further action on moving forward with the project at their Feb. 27 meeting.

The school board also approved to extend contracts to Kimi Melendy, director of Education Services; Kevin Lords, director of Human Resources; Derild Parsons, director of Special Services; and Lisa Bliss, Assessment and Data coordinator.

Early retirement applications were approved for Mike Compagnoni, Diane Slowan, Julie Richards, Lori Norcutt, Becky Dodd and Brian Alexander.

Trustees also recognized Trista Dorman and Kayleigh Moss, Churchill County Middle School winners in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1002 Patriot’s Pen essay contest; Ashby Trotter, state winner in the VFW Voice of Democracy speech contest; Numa teacher Tiffany Picotte, VFW state Teacher of the Year for elementary-school grades; Keith Lund, VFW District 4 Teacher of the Year for high-school grades; and state champion wrestlers Sean McCormick, Tommy McCormick and Ben Dooley.
