Community sports: Silver State Gymnastics continue to shine

Carson City’s Silver State Gymnastics continued to have success at the Deltchev Classic this past weekend in Reno. The event was hosted by 1980 Olympic gold medalist Stoyan Deltchev, so the meet was well attended.

Silver State’s Level 7 and Excel Gold teams placed first over all.

Silver State results were:

Junior Olympic Level 7 Senior Division: Eviana McGowan won first place on bars, beam, floor, and the all-around (AA); Emily Lewis placed third on vault and beam, second on bars, floor, and the AA; Elle Liebendorfer was first on vault, second on floor, third on bars and the AA; Eliana Hollar placed second on floor and was fourth place AA.

Excel Gold Level

Child Division: Alyssa Matthies won first place on vault, bars, beam, floor, and the AA.

Junior B Division: Hayley Williams was second on beam, third AA; Ali Maschke placed third on floor.

Senior A Division: Sara Mitchell was third on vault and second on floor.

Senior B Division: Tabby Thompson placed first on vault, bars, beam, floor, and the AA.

Excel Bronze Level

Child C Division: Madeline Smith won first place on floor, second on bars and the AA; Rebecca DiGangi was first on vault, third on bars and the AA; Catherine Harrah placed third on bars.

Senior Division: Morgan Saindon was first on vault, beam, and the AA; Haylee Butler was first on bars, second on floor and AA.

The Excel Bronze team took second overall.

“With State Championships coming up in only three weeks, this was a really good meet for the girls to hone their skills and build confidence,” Silver State coach David Lester said. “Hopefully when we get back to the gym this week they will be extra motivated to work hard and challenge themselves. Their next meet will be in two weeks down in Sacramento and will hopefully prepare them for Championships the following week.”

Students compete in Air Rifle event

Micheal Johnson, Pinky Nguyen,and Terry Kiersten were the top awards winners from Carson High School during the American Legion Air Rifle Tournament. The competition was conducted by retired LCDR Dan Meyer, Senior Naval Science Instructor at Carson High.

American Legion Capitol Post 4 in Carson City sponsored the Carson High NJROTC rifle program for the tournament, which is conducted on a regional, state and national level.

Johnson captured first place, followed by Nguyen in second and Kierstein in third. Awards were presented at Carson High on Feb. 21.

The students use the .177 caliber air rifle. Both males and females can participate, through Legion sponsorship. Competitors shoot from the prone position, standing position and the kneeling position. All positions are timed.

Capital City Hoops free clinic set

Capital City Hoops is hosting a free basketball clinic for students in grades second through eighth grades. The event will be held Saturday, March 2 at Carson High School.

This event is broken into two one-hour sessions. Grades two through five will be from 10 to 11 a.m. and grades six through eighth will be from 11 a.m. to noon.

There’s a limit of 100 campers per session. All boys and girls interested in basketball are welcome. The one hour session will include ball handling, footwork, and other fundamentals of basketball. The camp is hosted by president of Capital City Hoops and Carson boys basketball coach Jordan Glover. Assisting him at the camp are former Division I basketball players and CHS varsity players.

Glover said he’s committed to giving back to the community.

“I want to provide a fun free opportunity for the youth of Carson City to see what basketball is all about. Thanks to the generous support of Capital Ford, we will be giving out free T-shirts also to the first 100 kids,” Glover said.

Registration forms are provided at the door along with liability forms. Campers should arrive 15 minutes early for registration. Capital City Hoops is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to providing the youth of Northern Nevada with the best basketball experience available in a safe, friendly, and educational environment.

Silver Oak Senior Men to tee it up

The Silver Oak Senior Men’s Golf Club (SOSMGC) has officially teed it up for the 2019 golf season. SOSMGC is open to golfers 55 years of age and older and all handicap levels.

Dues are $75 which include your membership and handicap posting in the Northern Nevada Golf Association GHIN service. As a member you’re entitled to reduced green fees anytime you play Silver Oak in 2019. The season tees off on Tuesday, April 2 8:30 a.m. There will be coffee and donuts served opening day at 8 a.m. along with a short informational meeting.

The SOSMGC plays every Tuesday morning, April through October. Various formats are scheduled throughout the season and this year we will be introducing a few new ones. Each week’s tournament employs a shotgun start format beginning at 8:30 a.m. in April, 8 a.m. in May through September and 9 a.m. in October. Weekly games and closest to pin contests are available each week. Three travel days are scheduled this season to courses in northern Nevada and/or California.
