Smart Strategies workshop to provide training on homeownership, radon

Home At Last, a program of the Nevada Rural Housing Authority, USDA Rural Development and the Nevada Radon Education Program are collaborating to host the “Smart Strategies for Homeownership, Repair and Radon” workshop. The free event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at The Studio at Adams Hub, located at 111 Proctor St. in downtown Carson City.

The free workshop will include presentations on:

Down payment assistance through Nevada Rural Housing Authority’s Home at Last Program, which includes the HAL Pals pet adoption program that covers pet adoption fees for Home at Last homebuyers. All attendees will receive a homebuyer education certificate, which is a qualification for down payment assistance.

Affordable home loans and home repair grants and loans from USDA Rural Development’s Rural Home Loan Program.

Nevada Rural Housing Authority’s Weatherization Program.

The Nevada Radon Education Program’s information on reducing the risk for lung cancer caused by radon, through testing, then mitigating homes if necessary. Attendees can receive a free radon test kit. A certified radon mitigator will present information on the process of mitigation.

“With the new year here, many people are refocusing their energy on setting good habits for their home and personal health,” said Kelly Clark, special projects coordinator at USDA Rural Development. “We are collaborating to put together a fun and informative homeownership workshop for everyone in the community.”
