Gina Chavez brings her Texas roots to the Barkley Theatre

Gina Chavez blends the sounds of the Americas with tension and grace, and she brings her music for a Saturday performance to the Oats Park Arts Center’s Barkley Theatre.

The box office, Art Bar and galleries open at 7 p.m., with the performance beginning at 8 p.m. A post-performance question and answer with the artists is also planned.

A free Conversation with the Artists begins at 3 p.m., also at the Oats Park Arts Center.

A multi-ethnic Latin pop songstress, Chavez is a nine-time Austin Music Award winner – including 2015 Musician of the Year and Album of the Year for her sophomore release, Up.Rooted. Her independent album topped the Amazon and Latin iTunes Charts following a national feature on NPR’s All Things Considered, and she has been hailed by The Boston Globe, USA Today, Texas Monthly and the Austin Chronicle.

Her band’s Tiny Desk Concert made NPR’s top 15 of 2015. Chavez and her band (accordion, bass, drums, electric and acoustic guitar, piano and trumpet) have performed in eight countries, touring as cultural ambassadors with the U.S. State Department.

Another album, Lightbeam, boasts intensely personal lyrics — “heaven knows our souls, our story / the shape of your heart when you hold me / wouldn’t tear us apart or disown me” — strong melodic hooks and a pop aesthetic that showcase Chavez’s versatility as an artist.

Recorded in eight days at Matchbox Studios in Austin, Texas, the album features some of Austin’s finest – Dave Boyle (keys), Conrad Choucroun (drums), and Steve Terebecki (bass) – on five unapologetically personal tracks that explore longing, faith, beauty and sacrifice.

The summer’s first free performance is June 15 at Oats Park’s Centennial Stage and is presented in cooperation with the mayor, city council and city of Fallon.

Ghanina singer-songwriter Rocky Dawuni performs his signature “Afro Roots” music, which is a mixture of Reggae, Afrobeat, Highlife and soul.

Also at the June concert, the Churchill Economic Development Authority is having its fourth annual “Please Don’t Make Me Attend Another Event” raffle. 3C’s Catering/The Running Iron Café and Twisted Branch will be on hand for food and drinks. The fun starts at 5 p.m. and continues through the Concert in the Park.

All gold tickets guarantee a ticket for a meal at the concert, and the first 50 silver/bronze tickets will also receive one meal ticket for each raffle ticket purchased. Beverage vendors will also be on site.
