A number of community holiday events are planned for this week and next, which include free meals on or before Christmas Day, a fireworks display on New Year’s Eve and the fun run on Jan. 1 to kick off the new year.
The Churchill County Parks and Recreation is sponsoring this year’s New Year’s Day 5K run/walk but with a different twist.
Due to the current State of Nevada and local coronavirus pandemic protocols, Parks and Recreation will use a staggered start format to maintain group sizes under 50 entrants. As of publication time, Recreation Supervisor David Ernst said the race will start on South Carson Street next to City Hall, but he will update that information later this week.
Ernst said each runner or walker must indicate the event in which they want to enter, and runners must provide an estimated 5K finish time. From there, he said all participants will be divided into three sections or waves depending on estimated finish time or age group. On Dec. 30, he said the wave start times will be emailed and also posted on their race link. The final determination on the wave start format will be made.
Ernst said he’s waiting approval from the Nevada Department of Transportation to use a portion of Harrigan Road for the race, and he will then approach the city to begin the race at City Hall.
According to Ernst, he said participants must access the run/walk website and download the registration form, complete it and then either mail or deliver it to the Parks and Recreation Department at the fairgrounds. For mailed forms, he said they must be postmarked by Monday or hand delivered by Dec. 31. If participants prefer to register in person, Ernst said they can sign up on the morning of the race, but the fee is higher on Dec. 31 and New Year’s Day. To facilitate the registration process on race day, he said participants should download the registration form and complete it.
Costs still remain the same but deadlines vary: individuals $20 ($25 on Dec. 31 and race day), families (maximum of four, $70 ($90 on Dec. 31 and race day) and canines, $3 per dog.
Age categories are the same for both male and female participants: 13 & under, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and older. The age group classification is based on the person’s age on the day of the race. Ernst said the top three male and female entrants in each age group will receive awards, and the first overall male and female will receive additional prizes. No award ceremony will be held e of the COVID-19 restrictions.

TOP GUN RESTAURANT DINNER
Top Gun Restaurant will be conducting its Christmas Eve Dinner for the Fallon community completely free of charge to anyone in Fallon who would like a meal.
Top Gun Restaurant will prepare the entire meal, and volunteers will package it up and deliver it to the homes. The last Community Christmas Eve Dinner served more than 500 meals, and the restaurant expects to exceed that this year. This meal is funded by the profits from all the catering events the restaurant does for the remainder of this year.

AMERICAN LEGION CHRISTMAS MEALS
Fallon’s American Legion Post 16 will deliver meals to Churchill County senior citizens on Christmas Day.
The William N. Pennington Life Center takes the holiday off, so the American Legion, community volunteers and active-duty and retired military fill the void. Volunteers are requested to arrive at the Fallon hall at 90 N. Ada St., between 8-8:30 a.m.
Post 16 will also serve a free community Christmas dinner to the public beginning at 11 a.m.
HOLIDAY CLOSURES
Both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day are a holiday. Government offices, schools and financial institutions are closed. The main post office on North Maine Street will be open on Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Garbage pickup is Thursday instead of Friday.
NEW YEAR’S EVE
The Churchill County Parks and Recreation and the city of Fallon co-sponsoring the annual New Year's Eve fireworks at the fairgrounds beginning at 6 p.m.
There will be no bonfire, though, because of COVID-19 protocol.
