Carson Sheriff Ken Furlong is looking for people interested in joining the Volunteers In Partnership with the Sheriff (VIPS) program.
Volunteers assist with citizen patrols, administrative support, front counter reception and the jail visitation program.
Furlong said the program often attracts retired people who are looking for something interesting to do for four to eight hours a week.
Volunteers must have a valid Nevada driver’s license, no felony arrests and be able to pass a background check.
In addition, Furlong is hosting the Fall 2021 Citizens Academy to give Carson residents a better understanding of how the sheriff’s office works.
The academy will run for nine weeks, Wednesday evenings, beginning Sept. 22 and ending Nov. 17.
Each session will begin with a question and answer period with Furlong. Each week, a different department of the sheriff’s office will teach a session. There will be a tour of the detention center and a visit to the communications/911 dispatch center. Speakers each week will include those from patrol, the crime lab, evidence, investigations, special enforcement, gang unit and DUI/traffic and domestic violence. There will be members of the search and rescue team, NHP, K-9 demonstration and SWAT.
The deadline for applications for the academy is Sept. 10. Space is limited by available seating in the Ormsby Room and COVID restrictions.
Anyone interested in either of the two programs should contact Colleen Schiller at 283-7810 or pick up an application during business hours at the front desk of the sheriff’s office, 911 Musser St.
