A candlelight vigil to honor Brett G. Palmer, president of the Nevada Veterans Coalition, will be held at the Lyon County Sheriff’ Office’s Fernley Substation on Monday at 7 p.m.

The substation is located at 555 E. Main St.

The vigil will provide an opportunity for people who knew Palmer to share their stories and show support for the Palmer family. Palmer died last Monday.

After serving his country in the United States Marine Corps, Palmer had a 36-year career in law enforcement and retired from the Lyon County Sheriff's Department in 2008. Palmer then became the NVC’s president.
According to the NVC, Palmer’s vision and work ethic inspired many others to action — to volunteer and to serve again.

“His leadership and guidance have provided comfort and closure to countless families and loved ones of veterans over the years via the NVC Honor Guard,” the NVC said in a statement.

Palmer is survived by his wife, five children and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family has asked for the following statement to be shared:

"We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share their feelings for our beloved Brett. We know that many of you will mourn with us and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief."
A service is planned for Oct. 9 at 10 a.m. at the North Lyon County Fire Station on Main Street in Fernley.
