After a hiatus, Douglas and Carson high leadership classes have been so happy to be back planning student activities. We welcomed the return of a five-year tradition of a game with staff members competing on both sides.
We have spent five years playing basketball and were excited to try something new. Though we were there to celebrate our rivalry, which is the best and longest in the state of Nevada, we also know that we can support each other like no other communities can. Our lives are woven together not only by competition but also by our love of the valleys we both call home. Both schools have many staff members that have returned in order to teach at their alma mater… both schools have many staff members that have returned to teach at the rival school. We always want to remember that competition is fun, but that coming together as a community is key.
On Nov. 17, both teams met at Douglas High School. While the Tigers came away with a victory, the real story of the night was the camaraderie, fun, and service that was met with this event. The game was set to benefit Alpine County and victims of the Tamarack Fire. Both DHS and CHS Leadership students enjoyed a meal with first responders before the game. All enjoyed the community that was built from that time spent together. During the game, both student sections were fiercely supportive of their teachers as they battled on the court. In the end, the Tigers and Senators proved not only to still be the best rivalry in the state of Nevada, but a rivalry that is filled with heart and community.
Events like this wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our student leaders. We are so proud of them and all they do to make our schools a better place. We would like to offer our appreciation to the following businesses and groups that donated to our cause: JC Merrithew Construction, Western Nevada Supply, Schat's Bakery, The Chocolate Shoppe, Francisco's, Yogurt Beach, JT Basque, Ironwood Cinema, Genoa Lakes Golf Course, DST Coffee, Amanda Keith & Pampered Chef, Squeeze Inn, Comma Coffee, Trader Joes, Auto Zone, and Human Bean, and Pizza Factory Minden.
Additionally, we would like to thank Carter Eckl, Ellen Townsend, and the DHS Volleyball Program for their support of the event. A special thank you to all of the first responders who risk their lives each day to keep our community safe.
Finally, a special thank you to our generous community who helped raise over $3,000 for our cause.
With Gratitude,
Ann Britt, Leadership Teacher, CHS
Mena Dedmon, Leadership Teacher, DHS
Karen Lamb, Director of Activities, DHS
