RENO — The Greenwave girls basketball team ended a three-game skid by winning the finale in the Varsity Elite Tournament last week at McQueen and Reno high schools.
Fallon, which competes in the 3A, faced competition from the state’s highest class, 5A, as well as two familiar foes from the 3A West.
Fallon lost to Reno, 40-26, on Tuesday in its tournament opener before falling to Galena, 40-35, Wednesday morning and Wooster, 35-31, later in the day. The Wave ended its three-day stay with a 30-27 win over North Valleys on Thursday.
Fallon visited Yerington on Tuesday for a 2A-3A crossover contest and opens 3A East league play on Friday when it hosts Lowry, one of the favorites to win the region. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. at the Elmo Dericco Gymnasium.
Fallon finished 4-2 against the 3A West to accumulate eight points. Each crossover win is worth two points since the teams play each other only once as opposed to a two-game series within their division.
Reno 40, Fallon 26
The Huskies scored the game’s first eight points. Reno, which led 14-3 after the first frame, had a tougher time with Fallon for the remainder of the game. Reno put the game away with a 13-point fourth quarter.
Galena 40, Fallon 35
A late comeback fell short against the south Reno 5A school.
After spotting the Grizzlies a six-point advantage in the first quarter, Fallon broke even in the second quarter before Galena outscored Fallon by three in the third. Fallon, though, rallied in the final frame with its biggest quarter of the tournament, 13 points, but Galena held on to prevent the upset.
Wooster 35, Fallon 31
Three weeks after Fallon sunk a pair of free throws to edge the Colts in the first meeting, Wooster avenged the 3A crossover loss.
Cassie Edgmon led Fallon with 11 points followed by Trinity Helton with seven. Zoey Jarrett scored five points and Ava Faught and Sydney Jarrett added three each.
Fallon 30, North Valleys 27
The Lady Wave defeated the Panthers for the second time this season with the second meeting being much closer than the 15-point win two weeks ago.
Hudsyn Clark and Helton each led in scoring with seven points, Zoey Jarrett had six and Edgmon added five.
