It took almost a decade but the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles has signed off on a license plate honoring the mining industry in Nevada.
The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (Northern Nevada SME) requested the plate in December 2011. It was approved in 2018 and took until just recently to design and get approval for the plate.
SME Chairman Chris Blue said a portion of the fees from the sales and renewal of the plates will go to that organization to fund scholarships for mining, engineering, geology, metallurgy and other mining related fields of study at Nevada universities. He said the number and amount of the scholarships will depend on the number of plates sold.
Blue said because the number of specialty license plates is limited by the Nevada Legislature, they must sell at least 1,000 of the plates by December 2022 and at least that many active registrations must be maintained each year to keep the plates.
In addition to automobile plates, smaller plates are available for motorcycles and trailers.
To raise some added money SME is planning to auction off the first 100 plate numbers. For information on the auction, contact Michael Norred at mike@techbase.com.
