Carson City supervisors and Washoe County commissioners met via Zoom on Wednesday afternoon to confirm a candidate to the Nevada Senate District 16 seat vacated by resigned Sen. Ben Kieckhefer.
The supervisors cast their four votes toward Robert Weise, and the commissioners cast their six votes toward Donald Tatro, based on District 16’s population. The two nominees were previously selected at the supervisors’ Nov. 4 meeting and the commissioners’ Nov. 9 meeting.
During Wednesday’s meeting, both boards voted jointly to recommend Tatro to fill the vacancy. Supervisor Maurice White and Commissioner Jeanne Herman voted no on the motion.
With Tatro’s nomination confirmed, the commissioners will soon issue a certificate of appointment to the Nevada Secretary of State Manager’s Office, and Tatro will immediately join in on the legislative special session for redistricting.
Tatro grew up in Carson City but now lives in Washoe County. He is most familiar with the legislative process thought his prior work experience as executive director of the Builders Association of Northern Nevada, along with his past roles as press secretary for Sen. Tom Coburn and deputy press secretary for Sen. John Ensign.
On a local level, Tatro has also sat on Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve’s Housing Task Force, the Washoe County Managers Advisory Committee, and the Reno Sparks Association of Realtors legislative committee.
