The Greenwave’s girls sports held strong last week, with the volleyball and soccer teams scoring splits against Elko County schools, while a pair of cross-country runners cracked into the top 10 in Winnemucca.
The following is a recap of Greenwave and Bighorns action from last week.
Volleyball
The Lady Wave split a pair of matches against Elko and Spring Creek over the weekend.
After falling in four on Friday to Elko, Fallon came back to defeat Spring Creek in four on Saturday at the Elmo Dericco Gymnasium.
Elko won by scores of 25-19, 15-25, 25-23 and 25-20. Fallon won Saturday’s contest 25-20, 26-24, 19-25 and 26-24.
Standings are not current but only the top-three teams from the 3A East will qualify for next week’s regional tournament in Fallon. Saturday’s win was Fallon’s first in league as the Lady Wave began the second half of the league schedule on Tuesday when they traveled to Lowry. Fallon travels to Fernley and hosts Dayton next week.
The Lady Wave held a successful Pink Out Night on Friday, raising almost $2,500 to be donated to local breast cancer funds. The city of Fallon assisted in donating swag and decorations in addition to running the event. The volleyball program received numerous donations from the community.
Oasis Academy dropped a pair of matches last week, losing to Sierra Lutheran in three and Whittell in five.
Sierra Lutheran won 25-14, 25-20 and 25-19 last Monday in Fallon. In Wednesday’s match at Whitell, Oasis Academy came back to force the fifth game after losing the first two games, 25-13 and 25-23. The Bighorns won the next two, 25-17 and 25-21, before falling 15-8 in the finale.
Oasis Academy is on the road this week as it faced Sierra Sage on Tuesday and travels to Virginia City on Thursday. The Bighorns host Coleville on Monday at the city-county gym.
Cross country
In Friday’s 3.1-mile course in Winnemucca, a pair of Lady Wave runners finished in the top 10.
Senior Savanna Regli placed fourth with a time of 21 minutes, 41 seconds, and teammate Zoey Brown, also a senior, finished in eighth in 23:06. The top time for the girls was Lowry’s Jovi Kuskie, who finished in 19:31.
Cameron Christy finished 19th for Fallon with a time of 19:37. Gerik Wassumuth finished in 21:33 for 29th. The top time for the boys division was Yerington’s Kutoven Stevens, who ran the course in 15:29.

Soccer
After a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Elko on Friday, the Lady Wave soccer team came back on Saturday to tie the league’s best team, Spring Creek, 1-1.
Fallon, which finished the first half of the 3A East schedule with a 2-1-2 record, traveled to Lowry on Tuesday.
The Lady Wave sits in third, a half-game ahead of Dayton, while Spring Creek leads the league at 4-0-1 followed by Elko at 4-1-0. Only the top three teams advance to next month’s regional tournament in Winnemucca.
The Greenwave boys suffered a weekend sweep in Elko County.
Fallon lost to the league’s top team, Elko, 9-0, on Friday before falling 5-2 to Spring Creek on Saturday.
Fallon’s 1-3-1 record puts it in fifth in the 3A East and one game out of the third and final regional-qualifying spot. Elko leads the league with a 5-0 record followed by Lowry at 4-1 and Fernley in third at 2-2-1. Spring Creek is in fourth at 2-3.
Fallon hosts Lowry on Thursday to begin the second half of the league schedule.
