Carson City supervisors to help fill Nevada Senate vacancy

Convened as the Redevelopment Authority, the supervisors will consider a resolution to fund the V&T Engine House Arches Implementation Plan. The proposed design calls for a double-arch installation along Oxoby Loop in Mills Park (not along South Stewart Street, as pictured in the original plans above).

With Nevada State Sen. Ben Kieckhefer’s recent resignation, Carson City and Washoe County must fill the vacant District 16 seat. Both will choose their own nominees and come together in a joint meeting for a final decision, but before that, each must design an application process.
The Board of Supervisors will meet Thursday to decide how Carson City will accept and process applications for the District 16 seat.
Among their other agenda items, the board will also consider:
• Opening a lawsuit against The Travelers Indemnity Co., for failure to provide liability insurance to the city, per its contract. In 2019, Carson City settled two lawsuits against the city, both alleging that a juvenile Camp Carson Summer Camp volunter molested juvenile camp participants. The Travelers Indemnity Co., declined to provide any defense or indemnity for a third related lawsuit that was threatened in 2020.
• Adopting resolutions to issue general obligation capital improvement bonds to finance a new Fire Station and improvements to the Quill Water Treatment Plant. Both are further covered by American Rescue Plan funding, so the fire station bonds are not to exceed $8.1 million, and the water treatment plant bonds shall not exceed $7 million.
• Appointing three members to the Airport Authority to fill vacancies in their Manufacturer, Fixed Base Operator, and Citizen-at-Large positions. Current authority members John Rogers and Michael Golden have reapplied for their respective Manufacturer and Fixed Base Operator positions.
• A motion to direct the Carson City Treasurer to sell six properties with delinquent taxes totaling just under $50,000.
Convened as the Redevelopment Authority, the board will also consider adopting resolutions to fund a Sidewalk and ADA Improvements project for $435,000 and the V&T Engine House Arches Implementation Plan for $265,000.
The meeting will be held in the Robert “Bob” Crowell Board Room at the Community Center on 851 E. William St. starting at 8:30 a.m. Those who attend in-person are required to wear face coverings.
