Great Basin Institute has been awarded a $160,000 grant to create the nation’s first professional recreational trail building school.
The grant comes from the U.S. Economic Development Administration. It will fund feasibility studies, economic analyses and other preliminary work to create the school.
The school will be based in Ely and be open to Nevadans as well as outdoor recreation professionals throughout the country.
Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., said the school will further solidify Nevada as a world class outdoor recreation destination and create new jobs in the state’s growing outdoor recreation sector.
“This grant to the Great Basin Institute will help students get hands-on experience preparing for careers in Nevada’s world-class outdoor recreation industry,” she said.
Kyle Horvath, director of White Pine County Tourism and Recreation, said Ely is centrally located in the Mountain West where he said trail-based outdoor recreation is booming.
