The bats woke up late but just in time as the Lady Wave softball team got back to winning with an 8-2 victory over Dayton on Friday.
Saturday’s doubleheader, which was delayed due to weather, resumed on Monday in Dayton. Fallon (7-3 Northern 3A) returns home on Friday to host Elko at 3 p.m. at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex. Fallon also faces Elko on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
A home run and error gave Dayton its only two runs and a 2-1 lead over visiting Fallon in the fourth inning.
Then, the offense got going in the fifth inning.
Tutie Ames led off by reaching on an infield error followed by Vernita Fillmore’s walk. Dana Buckmaster’s sac bunt pushed Ames and Fillmore into scoring position, and Lydia Bergman walked to load the bases.
With Reece Hutchings at the plate, Ames was caught stealing home on the first pitch but Bergman and Fillmore advanced to second and third. Facing a 1-2 count with two outs, Hutchings drove the ball past the right fielder, speeding across the bases to record a three-run inside-the-park home run to give Fallon a 4-2 lead.
After Shayda Lofthouse retired Dayton in order in the bottom of the fifth, Fallon added four more runs in the sixth.
An error and two singles put Kiley Wallance, Darci Owens and Ames on base with one out. Fillmore’s infield flyout was avenged in the next at-bat when Buckmaster’s grounder was mishandled by the shortstop. The error scored Wallace and Owens. Bergman followed with a line-drive double to left field to score Ames and Buckmaster.
Lofthouse picked up the win, pitching seven innings and allowing only one earned run, a home run in the second inning. She struck out three and walked three.
