The Greenwave baseball team was perfect last week, sweeping a make-up doubleheader in Dayton, before sweeping a three-game series over Elko in Fallon.
Fallon, which improved to 9-4 and is on a seven-game winning streak, hosts Lowry on Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for their final home games of the season. The Greenwave travels to Spring Creek next weekend to conclude the regular season.
Senior Tyler Austin’s walkoff on Saturday capped off the series sweep over Elko as Fallon came from behind to win, 6-5.
After Fallon tied the game with three runs in the sixth inning, Carter Paul and Steven Moon singled in the final inning before Carter advanced to third two batters later when Isaiah Diaz grounded into a fielder’s choice. On the fourth pitch of his at-bat, Austin drove the ball past the shortstop into left field for the winning hit.
Fallon jumped out to an early two-run lead but Elko scored five in the fifth.
Senior Damien Towne singled in Brady Alves for the first run of the game in the first inning, and Moon doubled in Paul in the second.
With Diaz on the hill in the fifth, the first three Indians reached base before a popout to Alves at shortstop kept the bases loaded. Diaz hit the next batter on the second pitch to score one before back-to-back errors scored two more runs. A wild pitch scored Elko’s fourth run before another error led to the final run of the inning. Diaz, though, struck out the last two to escape further damage.
Moon led off the sixth with a single to left followed by Alves reaching on an error. Diaz singled in Moon to trim the deficit to 5-3. With Alves at third and Diaz at second after Austin’s groundout, Towne drove in both on the second pitch to tie the game.
In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, an 11-4 win, Fallon also battled from behind, scoring 10 unanswered runs after Elko grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second.
After Elko scored two off Austin, Diaz scored on an outfielder error before Francisco Tapia singled in James Kelsey to tie the game with two outs. With Moon at the plate, Rolland Grondin scored on a passed ball as Fallon took the lead, 3-2.
In the next inning, Towne singled in Aiden Gonzales, and Austin, who was hit by the pitch before Towne stepped in, stole home to give Fallon a 5-2 advantage.
Fallon scored five runs with two outs in the fourth inning.
Tapia stole home before Towne singled in Alves and Austin with a drive to center. After a Diaz single, Kelsey ripped a two-run triple to center as Fallon doubled its run output and increased the lead to eight.
Fallon added another run in the sixth when Alves scored on Diaz’s groundout.
Friday’s series opener saw Fallon take an early lead only to need to battle from behind to win 9-5.
With the Indians ahead 3-1 in the third inning, Towne’s walk led to a run and Kelsey’s two-run single gave Fallon the lead for good. Paul singled in a run and Moon tripled on his first pitch to drive in two.
Towne pitched five innings and struck out five for the win.
